MITS WITS - Adult Christian Education

MITS-WITS meets Sundays at 9:50 am in the Wesley Center from September to early June.

This adult Sunday School class with the funny name started in 1972.  MITS-WITS is an acronym for "Man in the Street and Woman in the Street."  Jack Clark, one of our founding members, had read Language in Action and Thought written by S.I. Hayakawa, who was inspired by Lillian Lieber.  She established MITS and his wife WITS to represent average citizens.  While Lieber used MITS-WITS to explain mathematics and relativity and Hayakawa borrowed them to illustrate how the "Niagara of Words" impacts the behavior of individuals, we liked Hayakawa's explanation of how individuals learn and adapt by cooperating and sharing knowledge with each other.   The class felt it symbolized the group's desire that all prospective members would be welcome in this class.  We would also be the same people at church and at our socials as we were in the rest of our daily lives.  We became family to each other, enjoying inexpensive (but sometimes elaborate) socials, often with children present, and learning through Sunday School programs that covered a wide variety of topics.  Over time we have come to think of it as also standing for "Man in the Search - Woman in the Search" - Christian men and woman searching and stretching their faith as they integrate it into their daily lives.

 What is MITS-WITS all about?

Our Mission: to integrate our faith into our daily lives.  We believe in the value of nurturing individuals in their christian faith.  We strive to provide a sense of belonging through fellowship, friendship and support.  We seek ways to reach out and minister in the love of Christ.

Who We Are:  We come from a variety of backgrounds, occupations and age ranges, but form a cohesive and caring group.

What We Learn:  Our Sunday morning classes are lively, educational, inspirational and diverse.  Formats include presentations, class discussion, video, small group discussion.  Class facilitators may be class members, clergy, or guests.  Subject matter covers social concerns, lifestyle issues, Bible study, community agencies or current issues.

How We Care:  We care for our church by purchasing needed items, decorating the Sanctuary for Christmas, helping maintain the building and grounds.  We care for others by adopting a needy family at Christmas time, raising funds for our missions through activities such as the poinsettia sale and omelet breakfasts and the fall coat drive.  We care for one another by helping each other in times of adversity, by providing meals in times of need, by offering comfort and support and by sharing joys and concerns.

How We Socialize:  Monthly social events include a wide variety of activities which offer Christian fellowship and opportunities to build friendships.  Past activities have inclouded:  family picnics, sports events, theater performances, scavenger hunts, game nights, theme parties, progressive dinners and road rallies.
